OUR MISSION

The Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area tells the whole story of America's greatest challenge, 1860-1875, through historic sites (buildings, farms, cemeteries) and documents across the state. The Heritage Area covers the entire state of Tennessee. It was designated by Congress in 1996 and is a partnership unit of the National Park Service.

The Center for Historic Preservation at Middle Tennessee State University administers the Heritage Area. This partnership-based effort preserves, enhances, and interprets the legacy of the Civil War and its aftermath across the state.
The Heritage Area partners with Tennesseans to:
  • identify and promote their stories
  • help them become stewards of their historic sites and documents
The Heritage Area provides:
  • leadership and support to organizations across the state to create opportunities for education, interpretation, conservation, and economic development
  • trained professionals to help develop and implement heritage projects
  • collaborative partnerships, which fund projects and programs on a fifty-fifty matching basis to government and non-profit agencies
